![]() ![]() Whatever its real origin, the tradition of April Fool’s Day is now as active in the UK as ever, as these classic pranks go to show. When the king’s counsellors arrived, they found the villagers doing all manner of crazy things, such as trying to drown the local fish, so they recommended the lodge be built elsewhere as everyone in the town was clearly ‘mad’. ![]() When the locals of the village of Gotham heard that King John wanted to take some of their land to build a hunting lodge, it is said they decided to play the ‘fool’. The true origins of April Fool’s Day are lost to history, but according to one rather fun suggestion, it may hark back to 13th-century Nottinghamshire. ![]() As in other takes on the tale, the Gingerbread Baby is a bit too self-assured for his own good. The gleam of copper pans, fur of the cat, and grain of the wood floors are all captured in remarkable detail. Jan Brett is the queen of details- her gorgeous, water colored, hand-drawn illustrations are all framed by even further little drawings. You'll never guess at the surprise twist ending!Īuthor. Little Matti opens the oven door several minutes too early, and lo and behold, a baby gingerbread man pops out of the oven. Thus I came to be introduced to the delightful works of Jan Brett. ![]() Which is why when I saw Gingerbread Baby on the library shelf, I knew that I had to check it out for her. We've read dozens of versions, and even own a few, which have all delighted her to no end. He thus discovers that the world is not so forbidding, and decides it's time to test his own wings. Reluctant to destroy the nest, Albert sleeps standing up and guards the eggs while the parents are foraging. Instead of going for a walk he "listened to baseball games on the radio and cut pictures out of magazines and wrote postcards he never mailed." One day when he stretches his hand outside his window, a pair of cardinals build a nest in it. Sticking his hand through the window grillwork each day to check the weather, Albert invariably decides it's "too cold," "too damp" or "too breezy" to venture out. Napoli's ( Beast) first picture book spins a beguiling tale of a recluse forced out of his shell through unlikely circumstances. ![]() ![]() Conversely, let’s say you notice someone you haven’t seen in a while and want to say hello and catch up. You know perfectly well why you ignored the person, but they don’t have a clue, if you have had a good relationship previously. So you turn your face away and walk quickly by, hoping they didn't see you. In the first instance, maybe you didn't want to see someone you know because you didn't have the time to deal with them. Most of us can probably recount an incident when we have been either the perpetrator of the act of shunning and/or the recipient of being shunned. And so we off-road from our usual topic of PTSD and delve into this unfortunately pervasive social phenomenon. ![]() ![]() In the past few months, the topic of shunning has presented itself to us one too many times to be ignored. ![]() |
